SYDNEY, 30 June 2020: The Tax Institute has welcomed the announcement today by the Inspector-General of Taxation of the Investigation into the effectiveness of ATO communications of taxpayers’ rights to complain, review and appeal.

“The Tax Institute has a long-standing relationship with the Office of the Inspector-General of Taxation,” said Tax Institute President Peter Godber CTA.

“The Office of the Inspector-General of Taxation has an important role to play in reviewing and reporting on systems operated by the ATO.”

“Clear communication to a taxpayer of their rights, whether it be in the context of a dispute or in their general dealings with the ATO, is essential in a well-functioning tax system. The Inspector-General of Taxation is well-positioned to ensure this is occurring.”

“We look forward to contributing to the review over the next few months,” said Mr Godber.
